This photo was taken on January 16, with Iowa Democratic Women’s Constituency Caucus member DJ Hassel who joined Iowa Democratic Chair, Rita Hart as they toured and learned about the Young Women’s Resource Center from director Kimberly Boggus.
The Young Women’s Resource Center, YWRC, is a non-profit organization that supports, educates, and advocates for girls and young women* ages 10-21. Through small groups and individual support, the YWRC provides programming for all young women, no matter what they may be going through. (‘girls and young women’ are defined as any persons who have been socialized and/or identify as female, including trans and nonbinary friends).
The visitors learned it is only with the support of more than 300 volunteers annually that the Young Women’s Resource Center is able to provide quality programming to young women in the community. An evening meal is provided to the participants as they come for the educational programs.
The organization provides a wide variety of programs for girls and young women ages 10 – 24 that help them gain confidence in who they are, providing them with effective problem solving and coping skills so they can make informed decisions in their future. Programs are centered on building resiliency, self-esteem, healthy decision making, confidence, healthy relationships, and knowledge.
All the YWRC’s programs are voluntary, free, and confidential, and are offered to girls of all backgrounds and personal situations. They are committed to the success of all girls and young women in Greater Des Moines.
During programs, girls can spend time with others in a supportive environment, have fun, and learn more about what it means to be a healthy young woman. The children of the participants are cared for by volunteers in the late afternoon and evening while the young women receive educational presentations and their supportive programs.
YWRC staff also offer age appropriate, fact-based reproductive health facilitation.
