How Regular People Become Candidates (and what they need from us)

Midterms are just nine months away! Every race, every district, let’s support people who run. In this session, you’ll learn what it’s like to run for office and how you can be involved.

Iowa House candidates Rachel Burns and India May share their path to becoming candidates, what’s needed in a campaign team, and how we can encourage women to run so no Iowa race is uncontested. Newly elected Women’s Caucus Chair Jo Vetter was host.

RACHEL BURNS is a community leader in rural Sac County with a wealth of experience and expertise in healthcare and education, and she believes these areas are in desperate need of reform. She ran as the Democratic candidate for Iowa House District 7 in a special election last December, moving the needle 11 points in a district dominated by Republicans. She will be on the ballot again for that seat this November.

INDIA MAY is a Registered Nurse, a single mom, and an advocate for disability rights running against a MAGA lawyer and real estate developer for the Iowa House in Chickasaw, Floyd, and Bremer counties. Bringing frontline experience in mental health, pediatric, and elder care, her priorities include defending the rights of rural Iowans, ending the attacks on public schools, and promoting timely, affordable, accessible healthcare for all.
